The Birds of the Air

The Watcher. The birds of the air are among my favorite things to photograph. This odd encounter occurred with an owl I photographed by a creek in a local park. I have been back many times but the spot where I shot this image just cannot be found. It is as if I was transported to a special place to shoot this little watcher of mine.

Peace. There are few things more peaceful to me than a lazy stream and the beauty of God’s creation.

“The birds are the saints, who fly to heaven on the wings of contemplation, who are so removed from the world that they have no business on earth. They do not labour, but by contemplation alone they already live in heaven.”

Together forever

The Vanitas painters painted with deep symbolism in their paintings. They were motivated by a strong desire to paint images that reminded us of the beauty of the world but also how quickly it fades. Everything withers and dies eventually. The mission of these artists, fundamentally, was to help us to understand both how to live in the moment an appreciate the world while also understanding we were made for something more. Something greater. Death is only terrifying if you have no plans for where you hope to be when that day comes.

This image with the skull of conjoined twins, for me, was a representation of both eternal love but also of the dual nature of our existence which we wrestle with as physical and spiritual beings. Oh, and yeah… it just looks soooo cool.

The World in Miniature

Not everything is as it seems at the old tavern tonight. Looks like the latest delivery of refreshing ale has arrived.

These photos are of a little diorama I constructed from a model truck and a bar I build from foam, wood and stuff that was laying around my workshop. I 3D printed the beer crates and brought it all together to photograph
